Hi! I’m Ed Newson and I’d love to help you in your music-making Journey.

I have had the benefit of learning music since I was 4 – firstly on the Violin then Piano. By my teens, I passed my grade 7 violin and grade 6 piano and was working towards grade 8 piano when I had a change of heart and spent a year learning pipe organ. I played violin throughout my time in school and at university and sang in the sixth form and university choirs. As a practising GP, my career has taken me away from having time to pursue music as much as I would have liked. However, I have always led music in church, from about the age of 12 on a small church organ in Cambridgeshire then in several congregations on piano, guitar and vocals including currently at Budleigh Baptist church. Now I am making an early exit from medicine, I have time to be doing what I love.

In the last 3 years I have given two charity Piano recitals for audiences in St Peter’s church Budleigh and for Sidmouth Music in the music room of Sidholme hotel.

I am a gentle and encouraging person and love to share my passion and insight into music. I taught piano to 3 young pupils whilst I was in my teens and would love to help budding musicians in their journey music-making on Piano and Violin. My tuition can cover different styles of playing in addition to understanding elements of the theory behind music as per the desire of the pupil.

In your complementary first lesson, I would love to understand your preferences of how you best learn, what style/s you wish to play and where you would like to take your playing whether that be purely for pleasure or working towards grades etc.

Lessons will usually be varied and fun including listening to you play, singing and clapping to develop rhythm and develop a musical ear. In learning and working on new pieces, you will be able to learn how to work out fingering, how to practice and all the other skills that develop over time. You will have the option of learning how to read music or if you prefer learn to play by ear or both.

I can teach beginners and intermediate levels (up to grade 5 standard) to ages 5-105

I will teach you at your home or you are welcome to have lessons in my music room where I have a handmade Yamaha acoustic upright for those studying piano.

Lessons held between 4:00 to 6:30 pm Monday to Friday, although I am willing to consider times outside these hours on enquiry.

Lessons cost £10 per 30min or £15 for 45min.

I have been DBS checked within the last 12 months
